Is the OPUS prewired for DC:DC charging?

Official wiring procedure for adding vehicle-to-trailer DC-DC charging on all Opus models

Overview Opus campers do not include a DC-DC charger as standard equipment. The factory 7-pin connection provides only a maintenance trickle (typically <8 A) from the tow vehicle alternator – insufficient for meaningful charging while towing. All current Opus models are pre-wired at the factory with dedicated 6 AWG positive (red) and negative (black) runs from the 7-pin junction box to the battery compartment, making DC-DC charger installation plug-and-play on the trailer side.

Recommended Component Redarc BCDC1240D 40 A DC-DC charger (supports lead-acid, AGM, gel, and lithium profiles)

Key Benefits

  • Full 40 A charging while driving
  • Proper multi-stage algorithm
  • Solar input ready
  • Ignition trigger protects vehicle start battery

Trailer-Side Wiring (Opus – already complete from factory)

  • 6 AWG red → Charge positive
  • 6 AWG black → Charge negative
  • Orange wire → Ignition trigger (switched 12 V)
  • Green wire → Ground reference

Installation Steps – Trailer Side

  1. Mount Redarc BCDC1240D in battery compartment using supplied bracket.
  2. Connect factory red 6 AWG to charger BATTERY + terminal.
  3. Connect factory black 6 AWG to charger BATTERY – terminal.
  4. Connect orange ignition wire to charger blue IGN terminal.
  5. Connect green ground-reference wire to chassis ground stud.
  6. Set profile rotary switch per your battery type (refer to Redarc label).

Tow-Vehicle Wiring (must be added by owner or professional)

  • Run 6 AWG red from vehicle battery + through 50 A midi fuse to pin 4 (or pin 10 on 13-pin) of trailer connector.
  • Run 6 AWG black from vehicle battery – to pin 3 (ground).
  • Run 16–18 AWG orange ignition trigger (switched 12 V) to Redarc blue wire via Anderson connector.

Fuse Protection

  • Vehicle side: 50 A midi fuse within 18" of start battery
  • Trailer side: Factory 50 A mega fuse already installed near battery

Torque Specifications

  • All 6 AWG ring terminals: 9–11 Nm
  • Redarc mounting screws: 5 Nm

Testing After Installation Ignition ON → Redarc LED should illuminate → 40 A charging within 60 seconds of engine running.
