Stay Safe in Your OP4

Let’s explore how to protect yourself and your loved ones whilst using your OPUS OP4 Camper Trailer.

Your OP4 off-road camper is your gateway to amazing adventures, and safety is key to making every trip enjoyable! This guide highlights essential safety features like LP/CO alarms, smoke detectors, and emergency exits, along with practical tips to keep you secure during your off-road camping experience. Let’s explore how to protect yourself and your loved ones!

Essential Safety Features

Your OP4 comes equipped with life-saving tools to ensure your peace of mind:

  • LP/CO Alarm: Located in the footwell, this device detects propane leaks or carbon monoxide buildup. Test it monthly by pressing the test button—listen for a loud beep to confirm it’s working.
  • Smoke Alarm: Positioned near the door, it alerts you to smoke from any source. Replace the battery annually or if you hear a chirping sound.
  • Fire Extinguisher: Stored inside the door, it’s your first line of defense against small fires. Learn to use it—aim at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle, and sweep side to side.
  • Emergency Exits: In addition to the main door, unzip the bed-end panels (use the bottom flap for a quick escape) if you need to exit fast during an emergency.

Key Safety Tips for Your OP4

Follow these guidelines to camp safely and avoid hazards:

  • Avoid Open Flames Inside: Never use candles or open flames while the propane furnace or stove is in use. This prevents fire risks and ensures good air quality.
  • Ventilate Properly: Always keep a window or roof vent open when using propane appliances (like the Truma VarioHeat or stove) to allow fresh air in and reduce the chance of carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Propane Safety: Never overfill your 20-lb propane tank—stop at 80% capacity. If you smell gas (a rotten egg odor), turn off the valve, ventilate the camper, and step outside immediately. Avoid using matches or electrical switches until the area is safe.
  • Regular Checks: Test your LP/CO and smoke alarms before each trip. Keep the fire extinguisher accessible and check its pressure gauge—replace if the needle is in the red.

Emergency Preparedness

Being prepared can make all the difference:

  • Practice Exits: Familiarize yourself with the main door and bed-end exits before your trip. Show your family or camping group how to use them.
  • First Aid: Carry a basic first aid kit tailored for outdoor use—include bandages, antiseptic, and any personal medications.
  • Weather Awareness: Monitor forecasts and avoid camping in extreme conditions (e.g., high winds or heavy storms) that could challenge your OP4’s stability.

Staying Safe with Heating and Cooling

When using your optional Truma VarioHeat furnace or Dometic Cool Cat A/C-heat pump, extra caution is needed:

  • Propane Furnace: Ensure vents are clear of debris to avoid carbon monoxide risks. Turn off the propane valve after use to prevent leaks.
  • A/C-Heat Pump: Use only with a proper 120V power source to avoid electrical hazards. Disconnect during storms to protect the unit.

What to Do in an Emergency

  • Gas or Smoke Detected: Evacuate everyone, turn off the propane valve (if safe), and ventilate. Use the fire extinguisher if there’s a small fire, but call emergency services (dial 911) if it grows or you feel dizzy.
  • Power Failure: If electrical systems fail, switch to manual operations (e.g., manual pump for water) and check connections or batteries.

Keeping Your OP4 Safe Long-Term

  • Routine Maintenance: Regularly inspect seals, hoses, and alarms as outlined in the Maintenance Guide to catch issues early.
  • Storage Safety: Store your OP4 dry and with alarms active to deter pests or hazards during off-seasons.
